Real-Life Communication

In order for their plans to go into action, emergency response managers must communicate with a number of different people.

"You need to be able to talk to your own people [and] you need to be able to instill confidence in the public when things are going south," says emergency manager David Galea. "[You need] not just to be seen to be doing the right thing, but keeping people aware of what the issues are and what you're doing to remedy the situation -- so you need to have good communication skills for sure."

You're an emergency response manager responding to an explosion at a chemical factory. Almost as soon as you arrive on the scene, the press shows up wanting the story. They want a statement and you're the person who has to handle this.

Here's the situation:

  • Chemical explosion occurred at BTP Chemical -- cause unknown, under investigation
  • Explosion occurred at 6:15 a.m.
  • All employees accounted for
  • Chemical is sodium lignosulphonate, a substance normally used on gravel roads
  • Fumes are hazardous and the area has been evacuated
  • Fire is under control
  • More details to be released later

Prepare a statement for the press giving the details in a clear and concise manner. Keep it under 75 words.
