Real-Life Math

You're a disc jockey preparing for an hour-long music show. The show consists of songs, commercials, the newscast, and all of your introductions and chit-chat.

You're figuring out how many songs you'll be able to play during the show. So far, you've got 15 commercials averaging 40 seconds each. The newscast will take 12 minutes. You calculate that you'll be chatting for about nine minutes.

The average song lasts three minutes.

How many songs can you play?

"Everything has to fit into an hourly package," says Pat Porter, who works at a light rock music station.
