Re: Dredging of ditch

After reviewing the site and discussing the project with you, Ms. Jones, I can give you an idea of what the job will take:

  • My Backhoe will dredge a 100-yard ditch
  • My Backhoe will remove any dirt or sludge removed in that process

The locating of any or all gas, water and power lines is your responsibility. All sites must be clearly marked. Any unseen obstacles that come to light after digging are not included in this estimate. Bedrock or any other impediments to digging will require a review of the contract with you, the homeowner.

This work will be completed to your satisfaction before payment.

My Backhoe's quote for work as outlined above is $1,040.

My Backhoe is available to work immediately and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,My Backhoe

It's important to learn to write proposals as an independent contractor.

"Estimates are used as a basis for writing proposals. Proposals spell out the individual specialty subcontractor's scope of work," says Roger M. Baldwin, director of business development at a construction company.

"The scope of work spells out exactly what that subcontractor will perform as his part of the work. This is where an owner is made aware of obstacles or 'unforeseen conditions' and the subcontractor is paid an extra based on a previously agreed arrangement like 'time and material' or [the] 'not to exceed' method."
