Real-Life Math -- Solution

Our letter to John Claire looked like this:

Dear John Claire,

As you may recall, you and I met last year at the modeling convention. We were both hurrying and didn't have time to discuss our specialties, but we did exchange cards. As it turns out, that was a lucky break for me.

I'm currently working on a model of a 1902 steam engine, and I've found myself faced with a question that I can't seem to get answered. How many rivets are in each section of metal on the steam engine? Would you happen to know the answer or would you know where I might find it?

Thank you for your time. I hope that I'll hear from you soon, as I'd like to make this model as historically correct as possible. If there is anything that I can do to assist you, please feel free to call me. I would be happy to help.

"E-mail and general communications skills are what we use most often," says Allan Crawford, a model maker. "There is not a lot of written communication other than e-mail with clients and between team members."
