Receive up to $3,000 annually paid toward your federal student loans if you agree to teach mathematics, science, special education, elementary education, and counseling in West Virginia.

The Underwood-Smith Teacher Loan Assistance Program is for educators of mathematics, science, special education, elementary education, and counseling in areas of high need in West Virginia.

Eligible teachers must agree to teach full-time in a public school in West Virginia in a subject area or geographic area of critical need for two school years for each year loan assistance is received. Partial awards may be made to eligible recipients with less than a full school year contract.

Award are up to $3,000 annually, are paid to the recipient’s federal educational loan institution, and shall not exceed the recipient’s outstanding loan balance.

Additional Resources

Eligibility for an award is limited to a teacher or counselor in a high need area in West Virginia. The following is a list of subject areas of critical need and the geographic areas of the state in critical need and are eligible to apply for 2023-24.
